Fall/Winter League Roundup: Rivera homers as play in Puerto Rico resumes

A Red Sox prospect is either in the finals, or on a team leading its semifinal series, in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia. The league in Puerto Rico was on pause and resumed on Sunday night, so action there was limited this week. Elsewhere the playoffs continued on as planned. This week's roundup covers the week of January 11 through January 17. For the full list of Red Sox prospects participating in these leagues, check out our Fall & Winter Leagues page, which will be updated continuously through the first week of February.

Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)
With Jarren Duran and Caguas already in the finals, the other semifinal series finally resumed on Sunday after a two-week, COVID-related pause, with Mayaguez pummeling Manati 30-8. Jeremy Rivera (pictured) did his part in the blowout, going 4 for 6 with a home run, three RBI, and four runs scored. Alan Marrero also reached base in both of his plate appearances, going 1 for 1 with a walk and two runs scored. The best-of-seven series will continue on Monday, with Mayaguez up 2-0.

Mexican Pacific League
It wasn't the best week for Joey Meneses, as he went 3 for 20 with two walks, three strikeouts and a stolen base, but that has not stopped Culiacan from taking a 3-2 series lead in the semifinals over Obregon. Meneses has been getting some action in left field recently, continuing his transition to a super-utility role.

Venezuelan Professional Baseball League
Another Red Sox minor leaguer is closing in on the finals, with Cesar Puello and Lara one win away. Lara is up 3-1 on Aragua, with the chance to close it out on Monday night. Puello went only 2 for 11 this week, but he drew six walks and scored five runs.

Anzoategui is down 2-1 in the other series, and though Oddanier Mosqueda and Everlouis Lozada are on the roster, they have not seen action in the playoffs.

While his team is no longer playing, Jhonny Pereda was named Rookie of the Year on Sunday after batting .338/.421/.421 over 133 at-bats while throwing out 6 of 13 attempted base-stealers for Caracas.

Colombian Professional Baseball League
Rivaldo Avila got one start in the playoffs for Monteria and it was one to forget, as he went 0 for 4 with four strikeouts. His team, Monteria, is currently in the finals, with the series tied 1-1 with Barranquilla.

Dominican Professional Baseball League
Aguilas was down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, but they won the last two games over Cibao to force a seventh game on Monday. Raynel Espinal had been pitching for Cibao, but he is no longer on the active roster.

Australian Baseball League
Collin Willis did not appear in a game this past week.
