Cup of Coffee: Scherff dominates, PawSox score 17

4/27 Cup of Coffee: The PawSox splurged for 16 runs in the first two innings, as Josh Ockimey (pictured, below) led the way with a monster second inning. Jarren Duran continued his hot start to the season and Alex Scherff (pictured, right) turned in a phenomenal outing for Greenville.

The PawSox hung an eight-spot in each of the first two innings, as Josh Ockimey homered twice in the second inning. The left-handed hitting first baseman added a double, drove in five, and was one of six Pawtucket players with multiple hits. Mike Miller went 3 for 6 with a walk, a double, two RBI, and two runs out of the leadoff spot. Brock Holt reached four times with a single and three walks in a rehab appearance.

On the mound, Ryan Weber picked up the win by allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Josh Taylor struck out two in a scoreless frame out of the bullpen.

The Sea Dogs were rained out on Friday and will begin a doubleheader today at 1:05 pm.

Jarren Duran, who was named the SoxProspects.com Player of the Week last week, continued his sizzling start to the 2019 with a 4-for-5 showing. The 2018 seventh round pick collected three singles and a double to raise his batting average to .397 on the year. Marco Hernandez also had a big game hitting behind Duran in the number-two spot by going 3 for 5 with three singles. Victor Acosta went 2 for 3 with a walk as well. Enmanuel De Jesus started and picked up the win by going five innings and allowing three runs. Jake Cosart got four outs to pick up his fourth save of the year.

The Drive dropped this one in extras, spoiling a tremendous outing from Alex Scherff. The right-hander went six innings and struck out nine while allowing just one hit, one walk, and one unearned run. Scherff showed good stuff, flashing 94 MPH on his fastball while working in a curveball, cutter, and changeup. He has his ERA down to 1.89 in 19 innings. Hunter Haworth took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings with four strikeouts. Greenville had just five hits, all singles. They were led by Triston Casas, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Player of the Night: On a night with multiple worthy options, Josh Ockimey gets the nod with three extra-base hits and five RBI. The 2014 fifth round pick is having an excellent season for Pawtucket, batting .250/.416/.617. He has 11 extra-base hits, 15 walks, and 19 strikeouts on the year. He split 2018 with Portland and Pawtucket and hit .245/.356/.455 in 117 games.
