Cup of Coffee: Shawaryn deals, Johnson rehabs

7/1 Cup of Coffee: Bryce Brentz continued his torrid home run pace with his 18th, as Pawtucket had its game suspended. Brian Johnson made a rehab start for Lowell and threw 51 pitches. Mike Shawaryn (pictured) was also dominant again with six shutout innings. Jhonny Peralta picked up his first hit in the Red Sox organization.

The PawSox and RailRiders had their game suspended after three innings of play and will pick up today at 4:35 p.m. Pawtucket currently leads 2-0, as Bryce Brentz blasted a two-run shot in the first inning. Brentz now has 18 long balls on the year. Jhonny Peralta picked up his first knock in a PawSox uniform with a double to the wall in left. Jalen Beeks was dominant in his three innings of work, allowing zero runs on just one hit with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Sea Dogs were postponed and will make up the game as part of a doubleheader today beginning at 5:35 p.m.

After two rough outings in a row, Mike Shawaryn has put together back-to-back terrific six-inning starts. Last night he did not allow a run on just three hits and a walk with six strikeouts. The bullpen was also good, with Adam Lau striking out four in two scoreless innings and Stephen Nogosek striking out three to pick up the save. Josh Ockimey had a big night at the plate by going 2 for 3 with a double and a pair of walks. Jose Sermo also had two hits including a double, and Bryan Hudson went 3 for 4.

It wasn't pretty on the mound for Greenville, as Tucker Tubbs, the Drive starting first baseman, had the best night of any Greenville pitcher. He tossed an impressive 3 2/3 innings of scoreless ball after three Salem pitchers combine to allow 17 runs. Jhonathan Diaz started and allowed nine earned runs on 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings. Offensively, Tyler Spoon went 3 for 5 and Mitchell Gunsolus had two hits and two walks.

Just as they did with the major league club, walks played a big role in this one as Lowell hitters combined to draw nine free passes. Rehabbing Joseph Monge and Garrett Benge each went 1 for 2 with three walks, with Monge blasting a home run as well. Juan Barriento went 1 for 3 with two RBI and a walk and Yomar Valentin added two hits. Brian Johnson was on a rehab outing, tossing 2 2/3 innings while surrendering two runs (one earned) with two walks and four strikeouts. He threw 51 pitchers and 31 strikes. Nick Duron was very good in relief, picking up the win with five innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts and one walk.

The GCL Red Sox took their first loss of the season despite out-hitting the GCL Twins. Pedro Castellanos went 3 for 4 with three singles and Ramfis Berroa added a pair of hits. Jose Gonzalez allowed three runs on four hits in four innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Rio Gomez and Tanner Raiburn each tossed two scoreless frames.

Gregory Santos started and threw a solid five innings by allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks. His ERA is 0.90 on the year. Geraldo Perez got the win by surrendering one run in three innings with three strikeouts. Joe Zacarias got the save with a scoreless ninth. Alexander Martinez and Ivan Jimenez each had two hits and Keibert Petit had a pinch-hit two-run double.

Player of the Night: Mike Shawaryn has had a bit of an up-and-down stint with Salem but turned in his second straight terrific start. In his last two outings he's allowed just one run in 12 innings with 11 strikeouts and three walks. In all, he has a 4.30 ERA so far with Salem.
