Cup of Coffee: Kendrick tosses rain-shortened shutout

6/6 Cup of Coffee: It was a quiet day down on the farm, with only one stateside affiliate in action. Kyle Kendrick (pictured) delivered a seven-inning complete game shutout for the PawSox to kick off their seven-game homestand.

Veteran right-hander Kyle Kendrick turned a stellar performance, humbling the punchless Chiefs for seven shutout innings. Kendrick scattered four hits, striking out two and walking only one. He induced 10 groundball outs and threw 52 of his 71 pitches for strikes. Steve Selsky paced the offense, with a 3-for-4 night that included a two-run fifth-inning homer. Bryce Brentz chipped in with a pair of hits, and Blake Swihart drove in two runs.

The Sox affiliate in the Dominican Summer League fell to 0-2 to start the season. The offense generated only three hits in the contest, rendering the solid performances of pitchers Rayniel Moreno and Carlos Cortes for naught. Moreno got the start and allowed one run on just one hit in 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking two. Cortes gave up just a single run as well, coming on a solo home run, in his 3 1/3.

Player of the Day: It's been an up-and-down season for Kyle Kendrick. One of the standouts in spring training, the longtime Philadelphia Phillies starter has a 6.34 ERA with the PawSox and was roughed up in a short stint with the major league club. However, Kendrick had the right recipe for success on Monday night, the second time this season he has thrown seven scoreless frames. Particularly positive has been Kendrick's control, as he has only seven walks in 49 2/3 innings.
