Help Wanted: Writers, Editors
SoxProspects.com is seeking applicants for the positions of Staff Writer and Staff Editor for the 2016 season. See below for details.
Help Wanted: Staff Writer
Position Overview: SoxProspects.com is looking for a Staff Writer to join the staff through at least November 2016. The primary responsibility for the position will include covering breaking news stories during business hours, such as promotions, signings, the draft, and awards. The new writer might also be asked to contribute to our Weekly Notes feature. There also may eventually be opportunities for enterprising writers to attend games in order to write feature stories for our News Page.
Applicants must have some prior professional or collegiate writing experience and must be willing to take initiative and seek out tasks without a lot of managing from editors. Applicants must also have a reasonable amount of availability to write during business hours (Eastern Time). This is an outstanding opportunity for an aspiring writer to gain experience - members of the SoxProspects writing staff have gone on to write for ESPN.com, Baseball Prospectus, the Baltimore Sun, MLB.com, and MiLB.com, among other outlets.
Position requirements
- Minimum commitment through at least November 2016.
- Prior writing experience is necessary. College-level writing experience and/or writing coursework preferred.
- Strong attention to detail required.
- Must have a professional attitude and demeanor.
- Willingness and availability to post breaking news stories in a timely fashion during business hours.
- Basic word processing skills necessary, basic web content editing skills a plus (e.g., formatting posts, linking to web pages).
- Familiarity with AP style preferred but not required.
- Proximity to Red Sox minor league affiliates useful, but not required.
- A basic familiarity with SoxProspects.com and with the Red Sox minor league system is necessary. Top-to-bottom expertise is not necessary, but the more background the applicant possesses already, the better.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
This is a volunteer position, as are all positions on the SoxProspects.com staff. However, we still expect professional-level applications.
