Fall/Winter League Roundup: Perth heads to the playoffs

This week's fall/winter league roundup covers play from the period of January 19-25, a light week with very little Red Sox activity. For the full list of Red Sox players who participated in offseason action, check out our Fall and Winter Leagues page.

Note that this will be the last roundup of the offseason. You will be able to find further winter ball updates in our regular offseason notes columns.

Australian Baseball League

Perth won nine of its last 11 games, and earned a spot in the Preliminary Final, where they will play Sydney in a best-of-three series starting this Friday, January 30. The winner will take on Adelaide in the ABL Championship Series, which will stream on ESPN from February 6-8.

Mike McCarthy (pictured) got the start on the 24th for Perth, surrendering five runs, three earned, in four innings, walking one and striking out four. Jorge Marban was dominant in his three relief appearances this week, tossing three hitless innings while striking out five, with a lone walk representing his only blemish.

Panama Professional Baseball League

While he did not play, Pablo Urena's team, Caballos de Cocle, won the Panama Probeis championship on Tuesday, completing a three-game sweep. Cocle will now represent Panama in the Serie Latinoamericana, essentially a lesser version of the more well-known Caribbean Series, which will pit the champions of the winter leagues in Panama, Colombia, and Nicaragua, as well as the Mexican Veracruz Winter League (not to be confused with the Mexican Pacific League). That series will start tomorrow, January 27.

Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico)

He has not played in the championship series, but Jemile Weeks' Indios de Mayaguez trail the Cangrejeros de Santurce three games to two in the best-of-seven league championship series.
