Help Wanted: Writers

SoxProspects.com is seeking applicants to join our writing staff. See below for details.

Position Overview: SoxProspects.com is looking for staff writers to join the staff through at least November 2015. Primary responsibilities for the position will include covering breaking news stories as they happen, including promotions, signings, the draft, and awards, among other topics. Writers will likely also be asked to take a regular weekly turn on the Cup of Coffee recap, once or perhaps twice a week, as well as contribute to our Weekly Notes feature. There also may be opportunities for enterprising writers to attend games in order to write feature stories for our News Page.

Applicants must have some prior writing experience, and they must be willing to take initiative and seek out tasks without excessive managing from editors. Applicants must also have a reasonable amount of availability to write during the course of the week, including during business hours on occasion. This is an outstanding opportunity for an aspiring writer to gain some experience in the field - past members of the SoxProspects staff have gone on to write for ESPN.com, Baseball Prospectus, the Baltimore Sun, MLB.com, and MiLB.com, among other outlets.

Position requirements:
  • Minimum commitment through at least November 2015.
  • Prior writing experience is necessary. College-level writing experience and/or writing coursework preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail required.
  • Must have professional attitude and demeanor.
  • Willingness and availability to post breaking news stories in a timely fashion necessary, availability during business hours to take on short tasks a big plus.
  • Basic word processing skills necessary, basic web content editing skills a plus (e.g., formatting posts, linking to web pages).
  • Proximity to Red Sox minor league affiliates useful/preferred, but not required.
  • Familiarity with AP Style preferred but not required.
  • A basic familiarity with SoxProspects.com and with the Red Sox minor league system is necessary. Top-to-bottom expertise is not necessary, but the more background the applicant possesses already, the better.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
Compensation
This is a volunteer position, as are all positions on the SoxProspects.com staff. However, we still expect professional-level applications.

If you are interested in applying, please email chatfield@soxprospects.com by 5:00 PM on Friday, October 31. Please provide an overview of your relevant experience and a resume. If you wish, you may provide no more than two examples of your previous work.
