Red Sox select Reed Reilly with their seventh-round pick

With their seventh-round pick, the Red Sox have selected Reed Reilly, a right-handed pitcher from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

A redshirt junior, Reilly chose to stay at Cal Poly after being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 18th round of the 2013 draft. The decision to return proved to be a good one for the 6-foot-4, 220 pound righty, as he saved 12 games as the closer for the Mustangs while posting a 1.71 ERA. In 47 1/3 innings, he struck out 53, walked 17 and did not allow a home run.

According to his MLB.com scouting profile, Reilly has a fastball that sits 92-93 and touches 95 with outstanding command. He mixes that with a slider and changeup.

Reilly is ranked the #181 prospect in the draft by Baseball America, and 229th by Perfect Game. He is the fourth member taken from the 2014 Cal Poly squad that went the deepest into the NCAA tournament in that school's history.
