Red Sox select Kevin Steen with their ninth-round pick
With their ninth-round pick, the Red Sox have selected Kevin Steen, a right-handed pitcher from Oak Ridge High School (TN). Steen is a pitcher with decent upside, who has a low-90s fastball and a promising, yet inconsistent, curveball according to Jim Callis on MLB.com. Steen was not ranked by Baseball America in their top 500, but he is committed to play for the Tennessee Volunteers next fall.
Callis also mentioned that the 6-foot-1 Steen was a star basketball player for his high school, so he has yet to focus on pitching full-time. With a slot value of $142,600, it appears that it will take an above-slot bonus to sign Steen away from his commitment to the Vols. The Red Sox have saved some money with their previous picks, so they have a decent chance to meet his demands.
