Red Sox select Kevin McAvoy with their fourth-round pick.

With their fourth-round pick, the Red Sox have selected Kevin McAvoy, a right-handed pitcher from Bryant (RI) University.

McAvoy led a Bryant team that qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2014, going 9-1 with a 2.62 ERA in 15 starts. Across 99 2/3 innings, he struck out 94, walked 28, and did not allow a home run. In his tournament start against Houston, he allowed two unearned runs in 6 2/3 innings, striking out six, but came away with a no decision as the Bulldogs fell in 10 innings.

Listed at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, McAvoy was undrafted out of Westhill High School in the city of Syracuse, New York. Al Skorupa of Baseball Prospectus reports that McAvoy's fastball touched 93 on the Bryant pro day and that it generally was in the 89-91 range during the spring.

McAvoy is the Red Sox highest selection from a New England college since pitcher Matt Barnes was taken in the first round of the 2011 draft.
