Players of the Week, June 24-30: Travis Shaw and Luis Diaz

Jonathan Diaz and Brandon Snyder stole headlines last week with their heroics in Boston following their recent call ups, but it was a different Diaz and another corner infielder whom the SoxProspects community paid its respects to this week, as Greenville starter Luis Diaz and Portland first baseman Travis Shaw (pictured) were voted SoxProspects Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. Each garners the awards for the first time this season.

Diaz, who signed as an international free agent five years ago, twirled 13 innings over two starts for the Drive, allowing just one run while striking out 15 and walking three. He also was named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week. The 21 year old now has a 3.38 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 12 walks over 40 innings this season. Diaz, who struggled in his first go-around in Greenville last season to a tune of 6.01 ERA in 92 innings, has enjoyed success this year because of his newfound consistency with all three of his pitches, as noted by Greenville's manager Paul Abbott in this MiLB.com piece.

In six games with Portland last week, Shaw batted .353/.522/.765 with two home runs, one double, and six walks (two intentional) to four strikeouts. He is now batting .236/.359/.378 in 320 plate appearances, production quite similar to what he put up last season in his first 133 plate appearances in Double-A (.227/.353/.427).
