Winter League Roundup: December 17-23


Mauro Gomez took home his second MVP award this season as the Dominican Winter League's regular season came to a close. In Panama, five Red Sox farmhands debuted as the league got underway on Tuesday.

Dominican Winter League

The Dominican Winter League's regular season ended this week and the playoffs will begin shortly. The top four teams (Aguilas, Estrellas, Toros and Escogido) will play a round robin 18-game schedule to determine the top two squads, who will play for the championship. 

Mauro Gomez (pictured) was awarded co-MVP honors this week along with former Red Sox farmhand Hector Luna.  Gomez was 2 for 14 with a home run and four RBI to wrap up the regular season. Gomez finished the regular season hitting .242/.370/.451 with eight home runs and 38 RBI. 

Alberto Rosario was 1 for 4 with a double in limited action. Rosario finished the regular season hitting .222/.329/.302 in 30 games.

Pedro Ciriaco saw his first game action since November 19 by 1 for 6 with an RBI and a run scored in three games this week. 


Tony Pena Jr. made two appearances this week. On Tuesday against Licey, Pena tossed 2 scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out one. On Friday against Gigantes, Pena allowed two runs on one hit and a walk in an inning of relief. The minor league free agent finished the regular season 5-0 with a 2.28 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings pitched.


Roberto Clemente (Puerto Rico) Baseball League

Anthony Carter, hurled 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits while punching out five. Carter added two saves to bring his total to six on the season. 

Jose De La Torre began his week with his worst outing of the winter, allowing four runs on four hits in just 1/3 of an inning against Manati. De La Torre bounced back the next day with a scoreless 1/3 of an inning against Ponce and finished his week by taking the loss for his 2 innings of work against Santurce. 

Jeremy Kehrt made two starts this week. On Tuesday against Ponce, Kehrt hurled 6 innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits while striking out two. On Sunday against Caguas, Kehrt picked up the victory for his 6 innings of work, allowing one runs on three hits and two walks. 

Jason Urquidez tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief across two outings. On Thursday against his former team Santurce, Urquidez picked up the victory as he allowed two hits and struck out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Ivan De Jesus kept on producing as he went 5 for 18 three RBI in six games this week. 

Henry Ramos (pictured) had a huge night on Wednesday against Mayaguez, going 3 for 3 a double, home run, RBI and stolen base. In his other two games of the week, Ramos was 1 for 5 with a double. 

Mexican Pacific League

Marco Duarte received a no-decision for his start on Thursday against Mochis. Duarte pitched 5 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five. 

Oscar Villarreal hurled 5 innings of relief this week, allowing one run on two hits. 

Australian Baseball League

Boss Moanaroa had his best week of the ABL season as he went 3 for 15 with two home runs and three RBI in four games.

Panama Professional League

Will Latimer tossed 3 innings in a rough outing for Cocle.

Luis Ramos hurled 3 scoreless innings for Panama.

Anthony Amaya was a perfect 4-4 for Herrera.

Robert Duncan was 0 for 3 in his debut for Panama

Pablo Urena collected a hit in his lone at-bat for Cocle.
