Red Sox select Michael Miller in the ninth round

With their ninth-round pick in the draft, the Red Sox have selected Michael Miller, a senior shortstop from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (CA).

Mike Miller
 (Cal Poly Mustangs)
The 5'8", 170 lb. 22-year-old hit .354 in his senior season despite missing some time in the beginning of the year with a wrist injury. He earned All Big-West honorable mention accolades in 2011 and also earned Big West Academic All-Conference honors.

Last summer, he played in the Alaska Baseball League, where he was named the Player of the Year and was ranked as the tenth best prospect in the league by Baseball America. Baseball America ranked Miller as the 113th best prospect in California in this draft.

The last shortstop drafted this high from Cal Poly was Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. While Miller is not Smith with the glove, he is sound fundamentally and can play both middle infield positions.
