Mathew Price suspended 50 games

Right-handed pitcher Mathew Price was suspended for 50 games after a second violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program for a drug of abuse.

Price was currently in extended spring training on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury. The 6-foot-3 righty was picked by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2010 draft out of Virginia Tech. Though he never put up spectacular numbers in college, he was thought to have some potential by the scouting community.

The 22-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery shortly after signing in September 2010. After rehabbing for most of 2011, he pitched in 3.1 innings between the GCL and Greenville Drive late last season. In that time he put up a 5.40 ERA with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks. He was likely slated for a return to the Drive upon promotion this season.
