Red Sox trim roster by seven

The Red Sox have announced that they have cut seven players from major league camp, optioning pitchers Clay Mortenson and Junichi Tazawa as well as catcher Luis Exposito to Triple-A Pawtucket. The team also re-assigned pitchers Brandon Duckworth and Jesse Carlson, catcher Max St. Pierre and outfielder Alex Hassan to minor league camp.

Mortenson, in his first season with the Red Sox, has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings this spring. He figures to be a member of the Pawtucket rotation to start the 2012 season. Tazawa, working his way back from Tommy John surgery, has compiled a 3.86 ERA in 7.0 innings this spring.

The cuts now leave Boston's roster at 46 as they begin to gear up for the beginning of the regular season.
