Sox get Jackson from A's for Jason Rice

The Boston Red Sox have acquired veteran right-handed hitting outfielder/first baseman Connor Jackson from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed reliever Jason Rice and cash. Bobby Jenks was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in a corresponding move to make space for Jackson on the 40-man roster. In 44 appearances (one start) with Pawtucket in 2011 Rice, 25, was 4-5 with 4 saves and allowed 35 earned runs on 77 hits over 85.1 innings for a 3.69 ERA and .238 opponents' batting average. He also struck out 89 batters and allowed 42 walks. ... Earlier in the day Wednesday it was announced that Boston signed former major league outfielder Joey Gathright out of the independent North American League and assigned him to Pawtucket.
