Jenks to disabled list, Williams called up to Boston, Hottovy designated for assignment

In a series of moves today, the Red Sox have placed right-handed reliever Bobby Jenks on the 15-day disabled list with back tightness and called up left-handed reliever Randy Williams from Triple-A Pawtucket. The team also designated southpaw Tommy Hottovy for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Williams.

Williams, 35, has been having a stellar first season in the Boston organization, posting a 1.29 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 6 saves 21.0 innings of relief for Pawtucket. Williams has had previously major league action before, compiling a 3-3 record with a 5.74 ERA in 90 games of relief split between the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies and Chicago White Sox.

Hottovy, 30, made his major league debut earlier this season, allowing 3 runs on 4 hit over 4.0 innings with Boston. He has been a part of the Red Sox organization since 2004, switching from starting to a relief role after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2008.
