Vazquez leads the way in Greenville's win


6/20 Cup of Coffee: The affiliates went 3-2 in yesterday's slate of action, with Salem's game being cancelled.

Pawtucket managed just 4 hits as they were shutout by Lehigh Valley (PHI), 4-0. The IronPigs put up a 2-spot in the top of the 3rd inning, and that was all they needed. Daniel Nava went 2-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Kyle Weiland started for the PawSox and put forth a strong effort, yet took the loss. Weiland went 5 innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 runs. He walked 1 and struck out 7. Jason Rice, Franklin Morales and Randy Williams combined to throw 4 innings of scoreless relief.

Portland pulled through late in a 7-2 victory over Akron (CLE). Portland was down 1-0 until they hung a 6 spot in the 6th inning. Chi-Hsien Chiang and Reynaldo Rodriguez were both retired to start the inning, but then 8 consecutive Sea Dogs reached base en route to opening the game wide open. Vladimir Frias went 3-5 with 2 RBI. Matt Spring went 1-4 with a solo home run, while Oscar Tejeda and Jorge Padron each went 2-4. Stephen Fife started for Portland and improved to 8-3. Fife went 6.2 innings and allowed 5 hits and a run. He walked 2 and struck out 3.

Salem’s game with Potomac (WAS) was cancelled.

Greenville jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the early going, and ultimately beat Savannah (NYM), 12-1. Christian Vazquez went 3-4 with a home run and 4 RBI. Heiker Meneses went 3-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Miles Head went 1-4 with a home run and 2 RBI. Brandon Jacobs went 1-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Brandon Workman drew the start for the Drive. He pitched 3 scoreless innings, allowed just 3 hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 4. Tyler Lockwood earned the victory by throwing 3 innings of relief. He allowed 4 hits, 1 run, did not walk a batter and struck out 2.

Lowell faced an early deficit and couldn’t recover, as they lost to Connecticut (DET), 3-1. The Tigers scored 2 in the 1st, and that turned out to be all that was necessary. There was not much to report offensively for the Spinners. Matty Johnson went 2-4 with a double, and that was about it. Madison Younginer started for Lowell and struggled. Younginer went 3 innings and allowed 3 hits and 2 runs. He walked 2 and struck out 1. Nefi Ogando relieved Younginer and threw 5 innings of 1-run ball. He allowed 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 1. Chris Huseby threw a perfect 9th inning with a strikeout in his organizational debut.

The DSL Red Sox had just 1 hit, but somehow managed to eek out a victory, as they beat the DSL Rays, 2-1. Andres Garcia had the lone hit. He went 1-3. Cleuluis Rondon went 0-2 with 2 walks and an RBI. Aneudis Peralta went 0-3 with an RBI, as his 6th inning sacrifice fly turned out to be the game winner. Jeffry Fernandez started for the DSL Sox. He went 4 innings and allowed 3 hits and a run. He walked 1 and struck out 3. Ricardo Betancourt came on in relief and improved to 4-0 on the young season by throwing 5 scoreless innings. He allowed 2 hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 2.

Player of the Day: Christian Vazquez, who went 3-4 with a home run and 4 RBI in Greenville's 12-1 victory over Savannah.
