Red Sox select Miguel Pena in 6th round
With the 202nd overall pick, the Red Sox selected pitcher Miguel Pena from San Jacinto College North (TX).
The 6-foot-2 junior-college left-hander was 10-3 with a 1.98 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 86.1 innings this season as a sophomore. He threw 6 complete games and 2 shutouts, and issued just 24 walks. As a freshman, Pena earned NJCAA All-American honors after going 14-2 with a 2.51 ERA. He struck out 97 in 96.2 innings.
A 2010 13th round selection by the San Diego Padres, Pena reportedly turned down between $150,000 and $250,000 to return to school. He was also a selected out of La Joya High School (TX) in the fifth round of the 2009 draft by the Washington Nationals, but elected to go to school. Pena was an All-American selection at La Joya.
Pena compliments his low-90s fastball with a sharp mid-70s curveball, and also throws a slider and changeup.
