Balcolm-Miller Keys Drive Victory

4/18 Cup of Coffee: Due to Saturday’s rainouts, the Red Sox affiliates were busy yesterday, and performed quite well.

Pawtucket’s Saturday affair with the Buffalo Bisons (NYM) was halted after 8 innings with the score tied 1-1 due to inclement weather. Play resumed on Sunday, and the PawSox prevailed in 10 innings by a score of 2-1. Daniel Nava hit a walk-off single in the 10th to score Jose Iglesias. Scott Atchison earned the win by pitching 2 scoreless innings.

In its regularly scheduled Sunday game, Pawtucket outslugged Buffalo, 10-6. Luis Exposito went deuces wild, going 2-2 with 2 doubles, 2 runs, 2 RBI and 2 walks. Lars Anderson went 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a walk. Yamaico Navarro went 1-2 with a double, an RBI and 3 walks. The infielder has now drawn 6 walks in his last 3 games. Kris Johnson got the win for Pawtucket, as he went 5 strong innings and allowed 4 hits and 2 runs. The lefty walked 1 and struck out 2 in his best performance of the season. Rich Hill continued his superb start to the season as he pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, surrendering just 1 hit and 1 walk and recording 2 strikeouts.

Portland used 3 home runs to beat New Britain (MIN), 11-6. Alex Hassan led the way for the Sea Dogs as he went 3-4 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and a walk. Through 9 games, Hassan is hitting .500. Ryan Lavarnway (2-5, a home run and 2 RBI), Mitch Dening (2-4, a home run and 2 RBI) and Tim Federowicz (1-5, a home run and 1 RBI) also contributed at the plate. Stephen Fife improved to 2-0 on the season by going 5 innings, allowing 6 hits, 3 runs and a walk while recording 3 strikeouts.

Salem played a doubleheader against Frederick (BAL) yesterday, winning the first game by a score of 6-5. David Mailman led the Salem Sox at the plate. Mailman delivered a 2-4 performance with a home run and 2 RBI. Jeremiah Bayer earned the win as he pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Pete Ruiz. Ruiz was roughed up for 8 hits and 5 runs in 4.1 innings.

In the second game, Salem used an excellent outing from Chris Balcom-Miller to beat Frederick, 8-1. Despite the 8 runs scored, there were not many stellar offensive performances. Kolbrin Vitek went 1-4 with a triple and 2 RBI, and Shannon Wilkerson went 2-3 with a double and an RBI. Balcom-Miller went 5 innings and allowed just a hit and a walk, while striking out 3. Through 2 starts, his ERA now stands at a robust 0.00.

Greenville just had to ruin a perfect day for the Red Sox affiliates, as they lost 6-2 against Savannah (NYM). Miles Head went 1-5 with a triple and 2 RBI. David Renfroe (3-4) and Bryce Brentz (2-5) were perhaps the only other bright spots at the plate for the Drive. Manny Rivera took the loss as he went 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs (3 earned). He struck out 4.

Player of the Day: Chris Balcom-Miller, who went 5 innings and gave up just 1 hit and a walk in Salem’s win over Frederick.
