Key home runs lift Peoria over Scorpions

11/3 Cup of Coffee: With a lot of attention focused on the national elections, Peoria used a pair of key home runs to pull off a late victory.

Peoria battered 14 hits and two key home runs to scare away the Scottsdale Scorpions 7-4.

The Javelinas jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Jason Kipnis (CLE) lofted a one out solo home run. In the third, Jose Iglesias and Cord Phelps (CLE) added RBI singles to give Peoria a 4-0 advantage. Scottsdale started to claw back in the fourth, adding two runs on a costly throwing error by Iglesias. Charles Blackmon's (COL) sacrifice fly in the sixth brought the Scorpions to within one at 4-3. Kipinis' RBI single and Dustin Ackley's (SEA) two run home run in the top of the seventh gave Peoria a 7-3 lead, one they would not relinquish. Former Boston draftee Brandon Belt (SF) added a solo home run for Scottsdale in the bottom of the eighth, accounting for the final Scorpions run.

Iglesias ended his day 1 for 3 with his RBI single before leaving the game in the bottom of the sixth for a defensive replacement. Juan Carlos Linares was 1 for 4 with a single as the Javelinas right fielder. Daniel Turpen added 1.2 innings of flawless relief, striking out 2. Seth Garrison also added 2.0 innings of relief, allowing 1 run on 2 hits.

The Javelinas will play host to the Mesa Solar Sox today at 3:35 EST.
