Red Sox select Chris Hernandez in the seventh round

With the team's seventh-round pick, the Red Sox have selected University of Miami left-handed pitcher Chris Hernandez. Hernandez, a strike-out artist, managed a 3.02 ERA in 89.1 innings, striking out 95. While he might be lacking in velocity on his fastball, typically sitting 86-90 MPH, Hernandez has exceptional command and significant movement on the pitch, also featuring an 81 MPH slurve. Standing 6'1" and weighing about 195 pounds, Hernandez does have a fair amount of projection in his frame, so his velocity might increase as he matures.

Hernandez has been highly regarded since his breakout freshman season with Miami, when he went 11-0 with a 2.72 ERA, striking out 117 in 112.2 innings in 2008. He also put up high strikeout totals in 2009, picking up 93 punchouts in 90.2 innings.
