Red Sox select Chris Hernandez in the seventh round
With the team's seventh-round pick, the Red Sox have selected University of Miami left-handed pitcher Chris Hernandez. Hernandez, a strike-out artist, managed a 3.02 ERA in 89.1 innings, striking out 95. While he might be lacking in velocity on his fastball, typically sitting 86-90 MPH, Hernandez has exceptional command and significant movement on the pitch, also featuring an 81 MPH slurve. Standing 6'1" and weighing about 195 pounds, Hernandez does have a fair amount of projection in his frame, so his velocity might increase as he matures.Hernandez has been highly regarded since his breakout freshman season with Miami, when he went 11-0 with a 2.72 ERA, striking out 117 in 112.2 innings in 2008. He also put up high strikeout totals in 2009, picking up 93 punchouts in 90.2 innings.
