Sox designate Shoeneweis for assignment, recall Sanchez

Following the Red Sox' 3-2 win on Wednesday, the Red Sox informed left-handed reliever Scott Schoeneweis that he will be designated for assignment on Thursday. Reports indicate that the move clears space on the 25-man roster for shortstop Angel Sanchez, who will start in place of Marco Scutaro on Thursday after his contract is purchased from Triple-A Pawtucket. Scutaro received a cortisone shot for tennis elbow in his left elbow on Wednesday and will not be available to play on Thursday.

Schoeneweis made 15 appearances for the Red Sox, allowing 12 earned runs in 13.2 innings, allowing 19 hits and walking 10 while striking out 13. He signed with the Red Sox late in spring training and earned one of the final bullpen slots coming out of camp along with Scott Atchison.

Sanchez has hit .313/.375/.359 in 36 games with the PawSox, hitting third in the team's batting order since April 21. He has made just 3 errors in 99 chances for a .970 fielding percentage, the majority of those chances coming at short. His prior major league experience came in 2006, when he played 8 games for Kansas City, going 6-for-27. Sanchez has an option remaining should the Red Sox decide to send him back to Pawtucket once Scutaro is ready to return to full-time duty.
