Sox claim right-hander Santo Luis

The Red Sox claimed right-handed reliever Santo Luis off waivers from the Chicago White Sox earlier today. He has been optioned to Double-A Portland.

Luis, 26, put up an ERA of 4.34 in 47 relief appearances at High-A Winston-Salem (CWS) last year. In 56.0 innings, he struck out an impressive 79 batters while walking only 23 and saving 14 games. He has been older than his competition at every level he has pitched in his career thus far, so it will be interesting to see whether he will continue to put up similar strikeout numbers in Double-A.

Infielder Jed Lowrie, who has been battling mononucleosis, was moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to make room for Luis on the 40-man roster.
