Buchholz demoted to Portland
Manager Terry Francona announced that struggling RHP Clay Buchholz has been optioned to AA Portland after another rough start. A corresponding move has not yet been announced. In 15 starts with the Red Sox in 2008, Buchholz is 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA, allowing 57 earned runs on 93 hits over 76 innings pitched, striking out 72 and walking 41 ... The Sox have also signed C David Ross and have assigned him to Pawtucket. In 52 big league games with Cincinatti before being released Ross hit .231/.381/.366 with three homers and nine doubles over 134 ABs. Ross is expected to become the Sox third catcher when rosters expand ... Veteran OF Jason Lane was also signed and assigned to the Paw Sox.
