The Red Sox selected Ivy League home run leader C Ryan Lavarnway out of Yale in the sixth round (#202 overall). Lavarnway, who led Division I batters with a .467 batting average in 2007, is still somewhat raw behind the plate as a converted high school outfielder but has a strong arm and soft glove, to complement his plus power and excellent plate discipline. He missed the final eight games of the season with a broken wrist and has one year of eligibility remaining. Will play in the Cape Cod League this summer.
