Lowell keeps Division title hopes alive with 4-0 win


9/2 Cup of Coffee: With a lineup weakened by Red Sox callups, Pawtucket split their doubleheader with Scranton/WB. In the first game, Scranton was just 1 out away from no-hitting the PawSox when Chris Carter singled to break up the no hitter. The PawSox although scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th lost the contest 11-2. Charlie Zink went 4 2/3 innings giving up 7 runs on 4 hits and 7 BB. He had 3 Ks. Scott Lonergan threw the final 4 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and 2 BB. He had 3 Ks. Cory Keylor went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI. Chris Carter went 1 for 4 and scored a run. The PawSox came back to take the second game 6-3. Abe Alvarez (5-8) started and gave up 2 runs on 6 hits and a BB. He had 1 K. Lincoln Holdzkom threw 3 innings and did not allow a run. He gave up 2 hits and 2 BB. He had 4 Ks. Travis Hughes pitched the 9th allowing 1 run on 1 hit. He had 3 Ks. Joe McEwing went 2 for 5 with a run scored and 2 RBI. Jed Lowrie went 2 for 4 and scored a run. Chris Carter went 3 for 5 with a RBI. Jeff Bailey went 1 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBI. Junior Spivey went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and a RBI.

Portland lost 7-5 to New Britain. They held on to their 1/2 game lead for the final playoff spot, however, as New Hampshire also lost. Daniel Haigwood started for the Sea Dogs and allowed 5 runs on 2 hits and 7 BB in 2 innings. He had 1 K. Barry Hertzler (3-2) took the loss giving up 1 run on 2 hits and 2 BB in 4 innings of work. He had 3 Ks. Hunter Jones threw 2 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits and 2 BB. He struck out 2. Jay Johnson went 1 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBI.

Lancaster outslugged High Desert 13-10. Kris Johnson (9-7) started and went 5 2/3 innings for the win. He allowed 4 runs on 9 hits and a BB. He struck out 6. Jason Blackey threw 2 1/3 frames and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits and a BB. He had 2 Ks. Chad Rhoades pitched the 9th and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits. Ryan Khoury went 2 for 6 with 2 runs scored and a RBI. Steve Garrabrants went 3 for 4 and scored 2 runs. Zach Daeges went 3 for 6 with a run scored and 4 RBI. Brad Correll went 3 for 6 with 3 runs scored and a RBI. Lars Anderson ,now hitting .379, went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a RBI.

Greenville fell 11-4 to Asheville. Jimmy James went 5 innings and gave up 1 run on 3 hits and 3 BB. He had 4 Ks. Chad Povich (1-1) was charged with a blown save and the loss. He went 2 innings and gave up 8 runs on 7 hits. He had 1 K. Richie Lentz went 1 2/3 frames and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 5 BB. He had 2 Ks. Infielder Mike Chambers came in to strike out the only hitter he faced. Argenis Diaz went 2 for 5 with a run scored. Reid Engel went 2 for 4 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Josh Reddick went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI. Mike Jones went 3 for 4 with a RBI.

Lowell kept their playoff hopes alive by blanking Vermont 4-0. They trail Oneonta by 2 games with 6 remaining. Jordan Craft (7-3) threw 5 innings of shutout ball allowing 3 hits and a BB. He had 2 Ks. Willy Mota threw 2 scoreless innings. He gave up 1 hit and 3 BB. Felix Ventura threw 2 perfect innings and had 3 Ks. Jorge Jimenez went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Player of the Night: Jordan Craft who threw 5 shutout innings allowing 3 hits and a BB in his win over Vermont. He helped keep the Spinners just 2 games back of Oneonta in the race for the Division title. Plus have to offer congratulations to Clay Buchholz for his magical no-hitter last night at Fenway.
