Bowden to Portland

The Boston Red Sox are imminently expected to announce the promotion of RHP Michael Bowden from Lancaster (high-A) to Portland (AA). In eight starts Bowden defied both the notoriously offense-happy Cal League and his home park effects, allowing 7 ER in 46.0 IP (a 1.37 ERA) holding opposing batters to a .212 BA (35 hits), striking out 46 while issuing 8 walks. These numbers belie his 2-0 record with the JetHawks, an artificially low number owing itself to unlucky breaks for the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April. Bowden was a 2005 supplemental first round pick for the Red Sox, compensation for losing Derek Lowe in free agency. Presently ranked as the Red Sox #3 prospect by SoxProspects.com, Bowden (20) was voted Pitcher of the Week for April 15-21.
