Red Sox prospect arrested on drug charges


According to the Augusta Chronicle, Boston Red Sox 2005 second-round draft pick Jonathan Egan was arrested along with two friends on September 9 outside of Millen, Georgia after being stopped at a roadblock. Egan was charged with felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance, driving while intoxicated, possession of alcohol by a minor, underage possession of alcohol, and possession of a fake ID card. The substance was believed to be under a gram of cocaine. He was held overnight in Jenkins County Jail, and was released on a bond the next morning. According to the Georgia Public Defender's office, a first offense penalty for posession of a schedule II controlled substance is imprisonment for not less than 2 and not more than 15 years. Egan's hearing in Superior Court has yet to be scheduled. The 18-year old catcher had recently completed his rookie season for the GCL Red Sox after recieiving a $600,00 signing bonus. He hit .222 with 15 RBIs in 35 games, and impressed the organization with his defense. He is slated to report to the Fall Instructional League this week.
