Cup of Coffee: Four hits for Cannon; Portland notches 20 hits

8/29 Cup of Coffee: It was a productive night across the system, as the full-season affiliates went 3-1, while the FCL team was suspended in the eighth due to rain. Portland had the most successful evening, pounding out 20 hits including four for Cameron Cannon, who doubled twice in the effort. Greenville pitched a shutout against Hickory behind a four-inning relief appearance by Casey Cobb. Jack Lopez, who tripled in the eighth to bring home the deciding run for Worcester, had two hits in a game that was back-and-forth at the end. As for Salem, the Red Sox were leading headed into the eighth but gave up a tally to send the game to extra innings, where their pitching staff struggled.

Worcester Red Sox 7, Buffalo Bison (TOR) 6

The Red Sox scored a run on a Jack Lopez triple in the eighth to take home the victory on Saturday. Lopez was one of five hitters with two base knocks on the evening, while he and Jeter Downs added two RBI each. Connor Seabold earned the start and did not go deep, pitching only 4 1/3 innings and surrendering four runs on six hits. Stephen Gonsalves picked him up, delivering 1 2/3 frames of one-hit, shutout relief. Brandon Brennan and Kaleb Ort had scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close out the victory.

Portland Sea Dogs 11, Reading Fightin' Phils (PHI) 3

Portland broke out for 20 hits in a dominating performance, scoring three runs each in the seventh and eighth to put the game away. Eight players had multi-hit outings, headlined by a 4-for-5 performance, including two doubles, from Cameron Cannon, while Ronaldo Hernandez and Hudson Potts each had three base knocks. Portland also had two home runs, one each from Triston Casas and Roldani Baldwin. The Sea Dogs sent Josh Winckowski to the mound and he surrendered three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits across six innings of work. He struck out eight Reading hitters and walked a pair. Rio Gomez contributed a pair of shutout innings, striking out five, while Joan Martinez closed the game out with a clean ninth.

Greenville Drive 3, Hickory Crawdads (TEX) 0

Three Greenville pitchers, Dylan Spacke, Casey Cobb and Zach Bryant, combined to shut out Hickory. Spacke got the game started with a three-inning outing, giving up two hits and two walks with six strikeouts mixed in. Cobb handled the bulk of the game, throwing four innings in relief, with just a pair of hits on his ledger. Bryant did not allow a baserunner, striking out three over the final two innings. Six hits was enough for Greenville, with two RBI coming off the bat of Stephen Scott with a two-run single in the sixth.

Delmarva Shorebirds (BAL) 7, Salem Red Sox 3 (10 innings)

Salem was the lone affiliate to lose Saturday, falling in extras to Delmarva. The Red Sox notched only five hits, two of which were off the bat of Matthew Lugo, while Ceddanne Rafaela added a solo home run in the sixth. Chih-Jung Liu had a short start, going 3 2/3 innings. He had traffic on the bases, with six hits and a pair of free passes, but limited the damage to two runs. He also struck out six hitters. Alexander Montero and Jacob Webb combined for 3 1/3 scoreless relief frames to give their team a lead in the eighth, but Joey Stock surrendered a run and the game went to extra innings. Jacinto Arredondo struggled in extra innings, as four runs crossed the plate on four hits.

FCL Red Sox 1, FCL Twins 1 (Susp., rain)

A rain system rolled through Fort Myers on Saturday afternoon, cutting the game short after seven full innings, but it will be completed September 3. The teams combined for just seven hits, four of which were from the Red Sox. Marcelo Mayer had the lone RBI with a double in the third. Juan Daniel Encarnacion carried the bulk of the pitching, scattering three hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings. He walked two batters against six strikeouts. The remainder was done by Cole Millam, who did not surrender a hit over 2 2/3 innings, but he did walk two batters.

DSL Red Sox Blue 6, DSL Red Sox Red 3

Alex Zapete was 3 for 3 with a walk, helping to lead Blue to victory in a seven-inning contest. There were baserunners galore, as the two affiliates combined to leave 28 runners on base across just seven frames. Juan Chacon and Alexis Hernandez had multi-hit outings for Blue, while Ahbram Liendo and Miguel Bleis did so for Red. Yordanny Monegro was on the mound for Blue, throwing 3 2/3 frames. He allowed five hits and three runs (two earned), while he walked four against two strikeouts. Robinson Parra, who replaced Monegro, had the best outing out of the arms between both teams, scattering two hits across 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He did walk two batters but did record three strikeouts.

Player of the Day: Four hits is a pretty good day. Cameron Cannon was 4 for 5 for Portland in its dominating win on Saturday, shining as part of a 20-hit performance in which seven of his teammates also had a multi-hit outing. Two of Cannon's hits were for extra bases, two of nine such knocks for Sea Dogs hitters. The 23-year-old is nearing a .300 average on the season, hitting .294/.343/.464 on the season, though he is still getting his feet under him in Portland, as his average less less than .250 across his first 49 at-bats up in Maine.
