8/5 Cup of Coffee

The system split six games for the second straight day, winning at both the top and bottom level of the system. They were led by Pawtucket, who dominated the Syracuse Sky Chiefs, allowing just one run in 18 innings. In this day-night doubleheader, Chris Smith started Game One, scattering three hits and a walk in seven innings, while striking out eight in his first AAA start. Jeff Bailey singled home Trent Durrington in the first inning, and that was all the PawSox would need. Bailey later added a home run, while both Corky Miller and Alejandro Machado also added two hits for the boys from Rhode Island, who won 5-0. Game Two was a similar story, as Pawtucket cruised to a 5-1 win, this time on the right arm of Charlie Zink. Zink also went seven innings, scattering four hits and walking one, while striking out six. Zink improves to 7-1 on the year, while Jermaine Van Buren allowed one run in his two innings of work to spoil the 16 innings of shutout ball. Corky Miller added his 11th home run of the year, while Machado had another two-hit game. The Portland Sea Dogs had the opposite result of the Pawtucket club, as they were shutout 4-0 by Erie. The lack of offense spoiled a wonderful start by Jose Vaquedano, who allowed just one earned run in six innings, while striking out three. Iggy Suarez had a hit in his first AA game, one of four the Sea Dogs had on the night. The Blue Rocks played another 5-4 game, but this time found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Mario Pena went five innings, allowing three runs (only one earned) and was relieved by 2006 draftee Bryce Cox, who went two innings, striking out two and allowing one unearned run. Bubba Bell led the offense, going 2-for-4. Greenville lost 7-2 in a game started by Michael Bowden, who allowed four runs in five innings, while striking out six. Matt Mercurio had a nice day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. Lowell won a tight, high-scoring affair, beating Staten Island 9-7. J.T. Zink gave up six runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings, but his start was salvaged by the Lowell offense. Justin Masterson threw two scoreless innings, continuing the excellent start to his minor league career. Both Reid Engel and Paul Smyth had three hits, one of Smyth's being a triple. Jon Still and Jorge Jimenez both added two hits apiece as the Spinners racked up 11 hits. The GCL Sox were rained out.

8/4 Cup of Coffee

The Red Sox minor league system had a better day yesterday, splitting their six games all the way down south from Sarasota up north to Lowell. The Paw Sox were victims of a 12-3 drubbing at the hands of Syracuse, and there were very few bright spots. However, one of these bright spots was former Red Sox closer Keith Foulke, who struck out two in his lone inning work. Continuing the lackluster performance of the upper levels of the Red Sox system, Portland fell again to Erie, this time by a 5-2 margin. Brandon Moss was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, while Andrew Dobies pitched somewhat effectively in his first AA start. Dobies went five innigns, giving up seven hits and three runs, while striking out three. Wilmington won a tight contest at home versus the Potomac Nationals, getting one run in both the eighth and ninth innings to win 5-4. Jed Lowrie went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, including a walk-off single. John Otness and Jeff Natale each had two hits as well for the victors from Delaware. Matt Goodson got the start for the Blue Rocks, going just 4 2/3 innings, giving up just two runs while striking out six. The Drive cruised to a 7-1 win, with Clay Buchholz starting and picking up his seventh win. Mitch Stachowsky led the way for Greenville, as he was 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI. Mickey Hall continues to hit well in his second tour of the South Atlantic League, going 2-for-5 with two doubles. Aaron Bates went 2-for-4 to continue the offensive highlights for the South Carolina club. Buchholz just needed to put together a decent start for Greenville, and he did more than that, going 5 2/3 innings and striking out nine, allowing just one run. The Spinners lost 5-4 to Hudson Valley, with Jon Still picking up his second home run of the year. Zak Farkes had two hits, one of them a double, and both scored a run and drove in one. Lowell closer JoshPapelbon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning, striking out two in the losing effort. In a shortened seven-inning game, the GCL Red Sox shutout the GCL Reds by a score of 4-0. Ground balls abounded for the Red Sox infield, as of the 13 outs in play, 11 of them came on the ground. Ryan Colvin started for the good guys, going two innings and allowing three hits, striking out one. Jose Capellan went the last five innings, striking out six, while allowing just one hit. Capellan improved to 2-0 on the year with his performance. Mike Jones was 2-for-4 with a double to lead the offense.

Player of the Day: Jed Lowrie, for his walkoff hit against Potomac (along with a 2-for-4 day). Honorable mention goes to both Jose Capellan and Mitch Stachowsky, both of whom could easily deserve this award on a normal day in the Red Sox system.

8/3 Cup of Coffee

August 2nd wasn't exactly kind to the Red Sox minor league system. While the big club won, its minor league partners were not nearly so fortunate. The Sea Dogs were victims of a 13-6 drubbing at the hands of the SeaWolves, with Frank Brooks allowing seven Erie runs in just five innings. David Bacani drove in two-thirds of the Sea Dogs' runs, going 2-for-4 with a home run, while Jacoby Ellsbury added two singles of his own, along w/swiping a base.

The Blue Rocks lost a slightly tighter game, allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth to lose 5-4. Beau Vaughan took the loss, allowing a hit and two walks while only retiring one Frederick batter. Jay Johnson went 2-for-5 with a home run to lead Wilmington, with John Otness, Jeff Corsaletti, and Scott White also recording two hits. John Barnes started the game well, allowing three unearned runs in five innings and striking out seven.

Greenville played a barnburner vs. Lake County, but ultimately could not come out ahead. Both teams had three runs apiece after nine innings, added two more in the eleventh inning, but Lake County prevailed in the sixteenth inning, leaving the final score at 6-5. Yahmed Yema led the Drive with three hits in seven at-bats, including a home run. Mark Wagner was 2-for-3 with a double, Luis Soto was 2-for-7, Chris Turner was 2-for-7 with a home run, and Dustin Kelly was 2-for-6. Chris Jones started for the Drive, going five innings and allowing two runs. Ismael Casillas had a fine relief appearance, going four innings and striking out seven, giving up only two hits and a walk.

The Spinners were shut out again by Hudson Valley, falling 3-0 while only having four hits. Travis Beazley got the start for the Lowell nine, and pitched five innings while allowing all three runs. Jean Guillen and T.J. Large combined for four innings of shut-out relief to keep the game close.

Player of the Day:
Yahmed Yema, the only player in the minor league system with three hits (plus he had a home run).

8/2 Cup of Coffee

Sox minor league teams went 2-3 this Tuesday, with wins both at the highest and lowest level of the system. Pawtucket beat Buffalo 4-2, behind a 2 for 4 effort from Dustin Pedroia and a Jeff Bailey home run. Scott Shoemaker, jumping up to a new level in Pawtucket, performed solidly, going five innings and allowing two runs, while striking out four Bison. The Sea Dogs unfortunately found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-2 decision against the Erie SeaWolves. Jacoby Ellsbury continued to hit well, going 1 for 3 with a HBP, while Zack Borowiak contributed with a home run. Tommy Hottovy started well (but finished poorly) in his first AA start, allowing four runs in five innings, though coming up with a nice 4 to 1 K/BB ratio. The Keys got the better end of the Blue Rocks, more than doubling them up in a 7-3 triumph. Jeff Corsaletti went 2 for 3 with a double, and Jeff Natale contributed a home run on his way to a 2 for 4 day. Gary Galvez got the start and pitched poorly, giving up 7 runs in just 3 innings. However, the Cox brothers (in reality unrelated) pitched a combined five shutout innings in relief, bringing a bright spot to an otherwise gloomy day for the Blue Rocks. Tim threw for three innings and Bryce threw for two, continuing his hi-A success. There was little positive in the Spinners day, as they were shut out 7-0 by Hudson Valley. Brian Steinocher took the loss, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing five runs. The GCL Sox brought some positive energy to the system, scoring twice as many runs as any other team in the system en route to an 8-3 win against the GCL Pirates. Jason Place and Kris Negron both went 1 for 4 with home runs, while Jon Egan continued to hit well in his second stint in the GCL, going 2 for 4 with two doubles. Jorge Rodriguez got the win, going 6 2/3 innings and allowing three runs. Mauricio Mendez pitched very well in relief, going 2 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out three.

Player of the Day: Jeff Natale, who showed some pop despite a losing effort.
